BYD Atto 3 and Dolphin at Three Years Old: What Needs Checking?

BYD Atto 3 and BYD Dolphin electric cars

The BYD Atto 3 and Dolphin are fully electric cars, which means their maintenance requirements differ from those of petrol and diesel vehicles. There is no conventional engine oil to change, but that does not mean an electric car needs no servicing.

As an Atto 3 or Dolphin approaches three years old, it is a good opportunity to review its maintenance history and check the systems that affect safety, reliability and everyday driving.

The exact work required depends on the model year, mileage, condition and manufacturer maintenance schedule.

1. Tyres and wheel alignment

Tyres deserve particular attention on any electric vehicle. Vehicle weight, torque delivery, driving style, tyre pressure and road conditions all influence wear.

Check the tread depth, tyre pressures and condition of each tyre. Look for uneven wear across the tread, damage to the sidewalls and differences between the inner and outer edges.

If one tyre is wearing noticeably faster than the others, an inspection may identify a pressure, alignment, suspension or tyre-related issue.

Do not assume that uneven tyre wear automatically means the wheel alignment is wrong. The cause should be checked before parts are replaced or adjustments are made.

2. Brakes and brake corrosion

Regenerative braking allows an electric motor to recover energy while slowing the vehicle. This can reduce how frequently the conventional friction brakes are used.

However, the brake discs, pads, callipers and associated components still need inspection. In wet conditions, surface corrosion can develop on brake discs, and prolonged limited use may contribute to uneven braking surfaces.

Pay attention to grinding noises, vibration, pulling to one side or a change in braking performance. A qualified technician can determine whether cleaning, further inspection or replacement is appropriate.

3. The 12V battery

An electric car still has a low-voltage battery that supports vehicle electronics and control systems.

If your Atto 3 or Dolphin shows intermittent electrical warnings, has difficulty waking up or unlocking, or behaves inconsistently after being parked, the 12V system may be worth checking.

These symptoms can have other causes, so proper testing is preferable to replacing the battery based on guesswork alone.

4. Suspension and steering

Suspension components help maintain tyre contact with the road and provide stable handling. Over time, bushes, joints, dampers and other components can wear.

Listen for knocks over bumps, creaks when turning or unusual vibration through the steering wheel. An inspection should also look for visible damage and abnormal tyre wear.

These are checks rather than a prediction that every three-year-old BYD will need suspension repairs.

5. Cabin filters and climate control

The cabin air filter helps manage the air entering the passenger compartment. Its replacement interval depends on the vehicle’s maintenance schedule and the conditions in which it is driven.

If airflow is reduced, unpleasant smells develop or the climate system performs poorly, the filter and air-conditioning system may need inspection.

A properly functioning climate system also matters for comfort and, in relevant conditions, window demisting.

6. Software, warnings and charging

Review any outstanding warnings, charging problems or infotainment issues rather than allowing them to become recurring frustrations.

Record the message displayed and note whether it occurs consistently or only under certain conditions. Where a software update is relevant, confirm that it is appropriate for the vehicle and available through the correct service route.

Charging faults should be assessed systematically. A problem at a public charger does not necessarily indicate a vehicle defect, while repeated problems across different compatible chargers may need further investigation.

7. Follow the correct maintenance schedule

At three years old, your car does not automatically require a fixed list of replacement parts. The work should be based on the model-specific maintenance schedule, mileage, service history and inspection findings.

Check the owner’s manual for your exact model and year. Keep records of completed servicing and any repairs.

Does your Atto 3 or Dolphin need a check-up?

If your BYD has uneven tyre wear, brake noise, suspension knocks, charging issues or recurring dashboard warnings, a professional inspection can help identify the cause before you commit to repairs.
