BYD Warranty in Ireland: What’s Covered, What Transfers and What Could Affect a Claim

Buying or owning a BYD can raise important questions about warranty coverage. What happens if a warning light appears? Does the warranty transfer when you buy a used vehicle? Could missed servicing or an unauthorised repair affect a claim?

Understanding the basics can help you make informed decisions if your BYD Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, Seal U or another model develops a fault.

What does the BYD warranty cover?

BYD publishes warranty information for its vehicles in Ireland. The published European-market policy lists the following key coverage periods:

  • Basic vehicle coverage: six years or 150,000 km.
  • Power battery: eight years or 250,000 km, with a stated 70% state-of-health condition.
  • Drive unit: eight years or 150,000 km.
  • Bodywork anti-corrosion coverage: 12 years, with unlimited mileage.

These are the figures published on BYD Ireland’s warranty information page at the time of writing. The applicable terms, exclusions and conditions for your specific vehicle must be checked against its warranty documentation.

A warranty period does not mean every repair during that period is automatically covered. The cause of the fault and the relevant warranty terms matter.

Does the warranty transfer to a second owner?

If you buy a used BYD, do not assume the warranty has expired simply because the first owner has sold the car.

Ask the seller for the original purchase information, warranty documentation, service records and details of any previous repairs. Contact an authorised BYD dealer to confirm the remaining cover for the specific vehicle.

Check the original in-service date, mileage limits and any requirements that apply to the warranty. A registration year alone may not tell you exactly when coverage began.

Can missed servicing affect a warranty claim?

Maintenance matters. The manufacturer may require the vehicle to be maintained according to its specified schedule.

Keep invoices and service records, and make sure the work performed is documented clearly. If you are unsure whether an item is due, consult the maintenance schedule for your model and year.

If servicing has been missed, it does not automatically follow that every possible warranty claim will be rejected. The applicable terms and the relationship between the maintenance issue and the reported fault need to be considered.

Can independent repairs affect the warranty?

Owners sometimes worry that using an independent workshop automatically invalidates the entire warranty.

That is too broad a conclusion. What matters is the applicable warranty wording, the work performed, the parts used and whether any damage or fault is attributable to the repair or modification.

BYD’s owner’s manual warns that damage and performance issues caused by non-genuine replacement parts may not be covered. Read the documentation for your vehicle and seek clarification from BYD if a proposed repair could affect a particular claim.

Before authorising work, explain that the vehicle may still be under warranty. For a potentially covered defect, contacting an authorised BYD dealer first may be the best route.

What if your BYD develops a fault?

Start by recording the warning message, symptoms, mileage and circumstances in which the issue occurs. Photographs or a short video can help document intermittent problems.

Check whether the vehicle is safe to drive. If a warning indicates a serious battery, braking or electrical fault, follow the vehicle’s safety instructions and seek professional assistance rather than continuing to drive.

You can then contact the appropriate service provider to discuss diagnosis and whether a warranty claim may apply.

What should used BYD buyers check?

Before purchasing a used BYD, ask for:

  • The original warranty documents and purchase date.
  • Service invoices and maintenance history.
  • Details of accident damage, modifications and previous repairs.
  • Information about outstanding recalls or software updates.
  • Confirmation of the remaining warranty with an authorised BYD dealer.

These checks can reduce uncertainty and help you understand the vehicle’s history before paying a deposit.

Need a BYD inspection or diagnostic assessment?

BYDRepair.ie helps owners investigate vehicle issues and understand what may need attention. If your BYD has developed a fault, we can discuss the symptoms and the appropriate diagnostic route.

Remember that an independent diagnostic assessment is not the same as an official manufacturer warranty decision. Coverage must be confirmed under the applicable warranty terms.

Contact BYDRepair.ie if you need help understanding a fault or arranging an assessment for your BYD.

Warranty information is general guidance, not a guarantee of coverage. Confirm the terms applicable to your exact vehicle with BYD Ireland or an authorised dealer.
